17. Extraterrestrial Highway
Next to Area 51 is Route 375. This road has adopted the nickname ‘Extraterrestrial Highway’ due to the number of reported alien and UFO sightings in the area.
16. Area 51’s most recent spy plane
This is a model of the RQ-170 Sentinel – otherwise known as the ‘Beast of Kandahar’. This stealth drone was built at Area 51 and is thought to have been the drone used to gather intelligence on Osama Bin Ladens whereabouts.
15. The lunar landing
Many conspiracy theorists believe that the lunar landings were staged at Area 51 as astronauts had carried out dry runs with the lunar rovers at the atomic testing ground next door.
14. Executive immunity
In the mid 90’s, the then President, Bill Clinton, signed an executive order protecting Area 51 from any form of investigation and granted immunity from the law. This, according to documents, was to protect national security.
13. Off the grid
One reason why Area 51 is still top secret and hasn’t suffered from internal leaks is that the base isn’t connected to the ‘internet’ as we know it. This means hackers can’t get into the system. It’s thought that the government have developed their own version of the internet for the base itself.
12. Are there aliens at Area 51?
During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Clinton said that Area 51 develops and builds stealth technology but adamantly denied there being any aliens.
11. A long commute
To stop locals from suspecting something odd was happening at Area 51, the majority of staff that work at the base are flown in to an airport in Vegas, they then have to drive 90 miles. Now that’s what I call a commute!
